We’re all about making games that last. But for the junglers to keep ganking, the carousel to keep spinning, and the spikes to keep being planted, we need to invest in the world outside of the game as much as we do in Runeterra. 

Last year, we formally announced our sustainability commitments which will help us move forward in reducing our overall environmental impact. We set our Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission target, committed to moving towards 100% renewable energy in our operations, setting science-based targets, and have a goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.

This road will be a long one but we’ve already made some strides, especially across our offices. Here are a few ways we’ve incorporated sustainability into our offices and the impact it's had so far.

Reducing Food Waste 

NOMs, our beloved on-campus restaurant, is one of the largest commercial kitchens in West Los Angeles. Serving over 2,300 meals a day, the team there has been leading the charge to reduce as much food waste as possible through a variety of different strategies while still delivering incredible meals to thousands of people a day.

  • How we cook: By making everything they can in-house the team is able to utilize things like food trim in stocks and soups, and overripe fruit in baked goods and desserts. At the same time, the team uses batch cooking to deliver the right amount of food to satisfy the demand while reducing the amount of excess food. 

  • Food waste tracking: In 2022, the team employed a new program called Winnow to help monitor food waste in the kitchen. This program automatically measures and categorizes food waste so the team knows what’s going to waste and can figure out ways to either reduce it or put it to other uses. Since starting this program, food waste in our kitchens has dropped 85%.

  • Donating to Chefs to End Hunger: If it can’t be reduced or reused, the team takes all excess food and donates it to Chefs to End Hunger, a non-profit whose mission is to facilitate the redistribution of prepared food to local charitable organizations that serve meals to their communities in need. 

Sustainability in New Builds

The best time to incorporate sustainability in a building is before it opens. A couple of our more recent offices show the impact that can be had when building from the ground up.

In the newest building on our Los Angeles campus, the layout was designed to maximize efficiency by diffusing direct sunlight, reducing the power required for cooling, along with stacking rooms with similar infrastructure to reduce construction materials. By planning ahead, we’ve reduced up to 10% of the energy usage in the building. The building itself is certified LEED Platinum.

At our esports Remote Broadcast Centers powered by AWS in Dublin and Seattle, sustainability was a key piece of their construction. The Dublin facility uses 100% renewable energy, is equipped with various monitors to reduce energy usage, and was outfitted with second-hand desks which helped reduce the center’s footprint. Because of this work, the Dublin facility is ISO 14001 Certified, a distinction given to organizations that meet Certification Europe’s Environmental Management Systems (EMS) standards.

At RBC Seattle, the build team brought the same approach which also obtained LEED environmental certification for the facility. The Seattle RBC was also equipped with one of the most eco-friendly HVAC systems available in the U.S. and the building’s electrical system uses Passive Infrared Sensors (PIRs) that detect a presence or absence in areas to determine the need for lighting which reduces energy consumption. 

Making Improvements with Sustainability in Mind

While new buildings have a bit more flexibility, there are always changes we can make to bring our existing offices up a level. Across our Los Angeles headquarters, the team has brought in LED lighting to replace less sustainable options, improved restroom fixtures to reduce water usage, and installed occupancy sensors to shut off lights when rooms aren’t in use.
 


Across the grounds, the landscaping team has revamped our fauna on campus to ensure most of it is drought-tolerant with an array of agaves, succulents, lion tails, aloes, and various other plants. These outdoor areas are equipped with smart irrigation controllers that will detect rain events and adjust seasonally to make sure the drip irrigation system is using just the right amount of water without excess.
